Abstract:   (342 Views)
Background and Aim: The effect of Helicobacter pylori on the occurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma has been associated with contradictory findings. Therefore, in this study, we examined the presence of Helicobacter pylori in tissue blocks with oral squamous cell carcinoma and compared it with normal marginal tissue.
Materials and Methods: In this laboratory study, 29 paraffin blocks with the diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma along with a margin of normal tissue were taken from the archives of the pathology department of Babel Shahid Beheshti Hospital. For more accuracy, two types of immunohistochemistry and Giemsa staining were used to determine the presence of bacteria. Data analysis was done using Fisher's exact test, Chi square, McNemar and Wilcoxon, and P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: By combining two diagnostic methods, 12 cases (41%) were positive and 17 cases were reported negative in tumoral tissues. Two positive responses were seen in normal tissues. We did not have positive normal tissue and negative tumoral tissue at the same case. The results of McNemar's test showed a statistically significant difference between the response of healthy and tumoral tissues to the presence of Helicobacter Pylori, and tumoral tissues were more likely to contain this bacterium than normal tissues (P = 0.002).
Conclusion: The results of the present study support the presence of Helicobacter pylori as a risk factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma. So, by preventing and controlling this infection, the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma may be reduced to some extent.
