Effectiveness of using vinegar before and after permethrin shampoo treatment for removing Head lice infestation in elementary school students

Background and Aim: Nowadays, there are many challenges in the treatment of head lice infestation and the effectiveness of anti-lice products is very important. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using vinegar before and after consuming permethrin shampoo for removing Head lice infestation in elementary school students in Qom province.
Materials and Methods: In the present study, 200 female students aged 13-17 years infested with head lice referred to two comprehensive urban health centers of Qom University of Medical Sciences from September to February 2020 by blocked randomization with randomly selected block size were treated with two treatments were used using vinegar before and after using 1% permethrin shampoo. removing of adult human head lice, nymphs, and nits was considered as the outcome of the treatment.
 
Results: The current standard treatment method of the Ministry of Health (using vinegar after consuming permethrin shampoo 1%) was able to remove the infestation in 45% of cases and the experimental treatment method (using vinegar before consuming permethrin shampoo 1%) in 79% of participants was successful in removing head lice infestation and had a high Odds Ratio (OR = 4.6 CI = 2.5-8.5 p = .000). 
 
Conclusion: This study does not confirm the current standard treatment method of the Ministry of Health (use of vinegar after consuming permethrin shampoo 1%) in removing head lice infestation and the treatment method under test (using vinegar before using permethrin shampoo 1%) is recommended.
