Background and Aim: Nosocomial infection is an infection that the patient contracted 48 hours after hospitalization or up to 72 hours after discharge, did not exist at the time of admission, and was not latent. Nosocomial infections lead to economic, social, and psychological losses for patients, employees, hospitals and the society. Since nurse aids and service staff have an important role in controlling nosocomial infections, this study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire to measure their knowledge, attitude, and practice towards nosocomial infections.
Material and Methods: A mixed method confirmatory study was performed to develop an instrument in 2019. Questionnaire items were extracted by searching databases such as SID, Magiran, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar search engine. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed with the opinion of 10 nosocomial infection control specialists. Then, the questionnaire was given to 135 nurse aids and service staff working in Tehran hospitals to assess its reliability and face validity. Data was analyzed using SPSS18 software and LISREL8.8.
Results: Content validity index and content validity ratio in the three sections of knowledge, attitude, and practice were in the range of 0.8 to 1. The face validity of the questions ranged from 1.6 to 5. Three-factor confirmatory analysis showed that the questionnaire has a good fit. In the knowledge section of the questionnaire, Kuder- Richardson reliability coefficient was 0.7 and Cronbach's alpha of attitude and performance sections were 0.76 and 0.71, respectively. Pearson correlation coefficient obtained in retest for knowledge, attitude, and performance were 0.86, 0.89, and 0.93, respectively. The mean score of employees’ knowledge, attitude, and performance regarding to nosocomial infections was.44±0.19 (intermediate), 0.71±0.18 (positive) and 0.63±0.16 (intermediate), respectively
Conclusions: The developed questionnaire has good validity and reliability for measuring nurse aids’ and service staffs’ knowledge, attitude and practice towards nosocomial infections. The level of knowledge and practice of nurse aids and service staff working in Tehran hospitals towards nosocomial infections control was moderate and their attitude has been neutral.
