Background and Objective:In this study, a novel electrochemical method was proposed for the determination of hydroquinone (HQ) in aqueous solutions. HQ is a widely used chemical compound in the pharmaceutical, dye, photographic, polymer, and cosmetic industries, while it is also considered an important environmental pollutant. Materials and Methods: To fabricate the nanosensor, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was initially modified with manganese oxide nanoparticles (MnOx NPs) and poly(alizarin yellow R) (PAYR). The modified electrode w:::as char:::acterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical behavior of hydroquinone was investigated over a pH range of 4–9 using the proposed electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were employed to evaluate the electrocatalytic oxidation behavior of the sensor. Results: Using cyclic voltammetry (CV), a linear range of 5 to 2100 µM and a detection limit of 2 µM were obtained for the oxidation peak at a potential of 0.15 V. In addition, using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), a linear range of 1 to 1900 µM and a detection limit of 0.2 µM were obtained. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the modified electrode exhibited a low detection limit, a wide linear range, and good repeatability for the determination of HQ at pH 7. Furthermore, the proposed electrode was successfully applied to the determination of hydroquinone in real water samples.
