Background and Aim: The mental load of work is one of the important and influential factors on the behavior and performance of nurses in the work environment, which evaluation and solving problems in this area will improve the quality of nursing care provided. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mental workload index and demographic factors in nurses working in teaching hospitals of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods:In a descriptive-analytical study, 125 nurses working in the teaching hospitals of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in 2016 were investigated using a stratified random sampling method. Data collection was done using a demographic form (11 questions) and a standard questionnaire for mental workload index (6 questions). The resulting data were analyzed using spss23 software and descriptive and inferential tests. Results:The overall average mental workload was 73.94±35.35. The effort evaluation score was the highest (96.02±92.51) and the physical demand score was the lowest (51.44±28.36). A significant relationship was observed between age, marital status, work shift, work department, rest after shift, number of shifts and physical health status with the mental load of work (P<0.05), but there was a significant relationship between educational degree and mental load of work. did not exist (P=0.08). Conclusion: The results of the study show that the mental load of work among nurses is high and this issue is related to demographic factors, therefore, while paying attention to the factors related to this index, taking measures that can reduce the mental load of work and subsequently improve the quality of care It seems necessary to become a nurse.
