Abstract:   (29 Views)
Background and Aim: Pulpotomy is one of the treatment methods for exposed pulp in primary teeth. Recently, this method uses regenerative materials such as Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Calcium-Enriched Mixture (CEM) cement. It has been observed that moisture improves the setting of these materials. On the other hand, rapid and appropriate restoration of pulpotomized teeth is another important factor in the success of the treatment and prevents crown fractures. Material and Methods: In this laboratory study, the roots of 60 extracted human primary molars were cut to 2 mm CEJ and apical sealing was provided with self-curing glass ionomer. 30 teeth were pulpotomized with MTA and 30 teeth were pulpotomized with CEM cement. Fifteen teeth in each group were exposed to moist cotton pellet for 24 hours, then restored with resin modified glass ionomer, and the other fifteen teeth were restored with modified glass ionomer resin at same day. After buccolingual sectioning, the samples were placed in an incubator for 21 days, and then Vickers microhardness test was performed on them. Results: The highest median microhardness value was obtained in the wet MTA group and the lowest median was in the CEM cement group without moisture. Both MTA and CEM cement had a higher median microhardness in moist conditions than in dry conditions (P-value = 0.000). Compared to MTA and CEM cement in dry conditions, MTA had a higher microhardness (P-value = 0.015), but in moist conditions the difference was not significant. (P-value = 0.395) Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study and considering the limitations of laboratory studies, it can be concluded that, if possible, it is better to perform the final restoration of pulpotomized teeth with MTA and CEM cement, after 24 hours of moist cotton pellet placement.
